itaguaçù project - brazil

Supporting family-run castor oil production businesses
country: Brazil
state: Bahia
municipality: Itaguaçù
farmers benefiting from the project: 35
enhanced land: 307 ha
first harvest: scheduled for September 2008
social support:
poligrow provides farm households with all the resources (materials,
technical advice) they need to grow castor oil plants on their own land
or on the land they were granted by the government.
technical support:
poligrow gives farmers all equipment and services needed to start
cultivation, e.g. fertilizers, transportation to the local dispatch centre,
seed decortication systems. The constant agronomic and technical advice
by specialized poligrow staff enable farmers to maximize productivity.
poligrows local branches will take care of product storage
and marketing.
support to agricultural enhancement :
poligrow is studying possible ways to enhance agricultural techniques
- such as, for instance, by installing mechanical decorticators on-site
- as well as exploring all possible channels to market agricultural products.
cooperation with institutions:
the project organizational phase has been logistically supported by the
local Prefecture (the executive branch of a Brazil municipality),
while the Municipality has provided for the supply of seeds to farmers.
Moreover, poligrow, Itaguaçù municipal authorities
and EDBA (a governmental body for agricultural development), are in the
process of signing a joint framework agreement to ensure the honouring
of their commitment to support farmers.
