itatira project - brazil

Supporting family-run castor oil production businesses
country: Brazil
state: Cearà
municipality: Itatira
farmers benefiting from the project: 148
enhanced land: 298 ha
first harvest: scheduled for September 2008
social support:
poligrow supports farm households that have been granted land use,
putting in place all the organizational infrastructures for castor bean
cultivation, in addition to ensuring that their products are marketed.
technical support:
poligrow provides farmers with all materials and services needed
to start cultivation, e.g. systems for chemical and/or organic soil correction
and agronomic technical advice by specialized poligrow staff.
support to agricultural enhancement:
poligrow is studying possible ways to enhance agricultural techniques
such as, for instance, the on-site installation of mechanical processing
equipment. poligrow and local public bodies are jointly pondering
the possibility of building facilities to produce organic fertilizers
from agricultural residues, with the dual purpose of promoting environmental
protection and curbing the use of chemical fertilizers.
cooperation with institutions :
poligrow cooperates with Emater-ce, a governmental body for agricultural
development. A framework agreement will shortly be signed by poligrow,
Itatira municipal authorities and Emater-ce (Empresa de asistencia técnica
y extensión rural de Brasil), to ensure that all commitments to
support farmers are honoured.
